Brussels city break with kids (mummy-and-me trip)
For her 10th birthday, we gifted my daughter a trip with her mum (me) to Brussels. This turned out to be one of the most memorable trips we took. And since then, we do a yearly trip with either parent and both kids. We all love it.
Brussels may be compact, but it packs a punch for family travelers! Its walkable size makes it perfect for a weekend getaway with kids, and let's be honest – what child wouldn't love a city famous for chocolate, fries/chips, and waffles? Here's how to make the most of your family trip to Belgium's charming capital.
Getting Around
Brussels is surprisingly small for a capital city, which is great news when traveling with kids. Most attractions are within walking distance of each other, and the public transportation system is reliable and easy to navigate. Buy a day pass to save money if you plan to use the metro multiple times.
Must-Visit Attractions
⚛ Atomium
This iconic Brussels landmark is slightly outside the city centre but absolutely worth the short metro/train ride. The Atomium isn't just a cool-looking structure – it's an interactive experience kids will talk about for weeks!
The futuristic stairways and spherical rooms inside feel like something from a sci-fi movie. My daughter loved racing up and down the escalators connecting the different pods. There's even a fun app-based game that keeps kids engaged while they learn about atoms and science.
Pro tip: Go on a weekday morning if possible to avoid crowds, and don't miss the panoramic view from the top sphere – you can see the entire city!
📚 Comic Strip Museum (Musée de la Bande Dessinée)
If your kids are into comics or graphic novels, this place is a treasure. Belgium is the birthplace of Tintin, The Smurfs, and many other beloved comic characters, and this museum celebrates them all.
Kids who can read (especially if they understand some French) will particularly enjoy this museum. Ask for the special activity guide for children at the entrance – it has games and questions that turn the visit into a fun scavenger hunt. Before leaving, spend some time in the cozy library section where kids can sit and browse through classic comics.
Food Adventures
🧇 Waffle Stops
No trip to Brussels is complete without sampling authentic Belgian waffles! Skip the touristy spots around Grand Place and look for local vendors where Belgians line up. The Brussels waffle is lighter and crispier than the denser Liège waffle – try both and let the kids decide their favourite!
🍟 Frites Stands
Belgian fries/chips are a must-try! They're twice-fried for the perfect crispy exterior and served in paper cones with dozens of sauce options. Maison Antoine in Place Jourdan is a local favourite that's been serving frites since 1948, and they have a cool system where you can take your fries to nearby bars and cafes.
🍫 Chocolate Workshops
Rather than just buying chocolates, consider booking a family-friendly chocolate-making workshop. Several chocolatiers offer sessions where kids can make their own treats to take home – a delicious souvenir and fun memory rolled into one!
🥗 ComoTapas
For something different, my daughter absolutely loved ComoTapas. It's not traditionally Belgian, but the concept is super fun for kids. You sit at the counter and choose from dishes that roll past you on a conveyor belt (like in sushi restaurants) but with European tapas instead. The interactive element makes dining an adventure rather than just a meal.

When to Visit
Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. If you visit in December, the Christmas markets add extra magic with ice skating, light shows, and holiday treats that kids adore.
Brussels might not be as famous as Paris or London for family travel, but its manageable size, child-friendly attractions, and let's face it – unbeatable snack options – make it an ideal weekend destination with children. Pack comfortable shoes and bring your appetite!
