Explore the wonders of Gerês National Park: a family adventure

If you're planning your next getaway to Portugal and looking for a spot a little more authentic and one not all tourists go to, I've got the perfect spot for you: Gerês National Park in Portugal. Packed with breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and natural wonders, this place is a dream come true for those seeking a memorable family vacation. It is also great for families with older children looking for more adventurous and action-packed activities.

Good to know: Peneda-Gerês National Park (its official name) is the only national park in Portugal. Peneda-Gerês National Park is in northern Portugal, near the Spanish border. Biodiversity is amazing there. Its rugged hills are home to deer, wolves and golden eagles. Trails include a Roman road studded with milestones. This is a mountainous region, composed mainly of granite, with points of high altitude where the effects of the latest glaciation can be seen.

Getting there

First things first, let's talk about the best way to explore Gerês – and that's with your own set of wheels! Renting a car gives you the freedom to navigate the winding roads and discover hidden gems that public transportation might miss. So buckle up, load up on snacks, and get ready for a road trip like no other.

Below is a suggested itinerary to discover Gerês’ main sights. You can easily do all of this in a day or spend more time at each spot.

Discovering Lindoso and Soajo: stone villages steeped in history

Your Gerês adventure kicks off with a visit to Lindoso and Soajo, two picturesque stone villages that will transport you back in time.

Lindoso: the village will take you on an amazing journey back in time hundreds of years. Besides a well-preserved medieval castle, you’ll find there picturesque granite granaries, a stone old town with quaint houses, and great views over the surroundings.

Soajo: In the village located at an altitude of 1416m, you’ll find picturesque granaries, a traditional stone old town with winding streets and quaint houses, and wonderful views of the surroundings areas.

Mezio Swing and Porta do Sol: Fun for the whole family

Mezio Swing, about 7.5m high, is the largest rope swing in Portugal and can be seen from a distance. Porta do Sol viewpoint, featuring lovely blue doors, is located about 300m from the swing. It’s one more place for admiring Peneda-Gerês National Park stunning views.

Waterfall Wonders: where nature meets splashy fun

Now, let's cool off a bit with some waterfall adventures. Gerês is home to several waterfalls, but when you're traveling with little ones, accessibility is key. Here are the top three waterfalls within easy reach of the roads, ensuring a hassle-free and family-friendly experience:

  1. Portela do Homem Waterfall: This waterfall is located very close to the Spanish border and is easily accessible. Just leave your car at the border, as it is not allowed to park near the waterfall and walk for 10 minutes to the waterfall.

  2. Tahiti Waterfall: Despite its exotic name, Tahiti Waterfall is right at home in Gerês. This is an area that is difficult to access. Despite being close to the road, you have to go down a winding path and without many protections to the lagoon. I recommend proper footwear and some caution.

  3. Arado Waterfall: Easily accessible from the road, Arado Waterfall welcomes you with its refreshing cascades and clear pools. It's an ideal spot for a family picnic or a quick dip to beat the heat.

Exploring a little further

If you have more time, you might like to also explore the sights below:

Tibo: one more great spot in Peneda-Gerês National Park, located at an altitude of about 800m.

Our Lady of Peneda: Sanctuary was built between the 18th and 19th centuries. Here you’ll find a long staircase with statues representing faith, hope, charity, and glory.

Action-packed adventure

There are lots of offers of more adventurous activities to do in Gerês: canyoning, kayaking and buggy rides are very popular. You could combine the itinerary above with one of those.

Where to stay

There aren’t many hotels in the region. We personally love the A-frame chalets of Casas da Madrinha as they sleep 4.

We have also loved the Lima Escape campsite for a little trip in nature with a campervan. They also offer simple cabin rentals for glamping options.

So, pack your bags, hit the road, and let Gerês weave its magic on your family trip. Happy travels!
