Exploring Florida beyond Disney: 15 must-do family activities
Florida is not just about Disney World; it's a treasure trove of family-friendly adventures waiting to be discovered. Whether you're seeking natural wonders, educational experiences, or cultural gems, the Sunshine State has it all. We have visited Florida twice with young children and have personally tested all of these addresses.
Here are 15 fantastic activities to enjoy outside of Disney in Florida, perfect for families with kids of all ages.
1. Shelling on Sanibel and Captiva Islands:
Known as the world's best shelling islands, Sanibel and Captiva offer a unique beachcombing experience for your little explorers. Watch as your kids collect colorful seashells and discover the incredible diversity of marine life. We found this little guide handy for kids.
2. Anhinga Trail in the Everglades:
This short and family-friendly trail in the Everglades promises an up-close encounter with alligators and fascinating bird species. It's a thrilling adventure that's easy for toddlers and young children. Our kids loved it so much, we did it twice.
3. The Turtle Hospital, Marathon:
Dive into the world of sea turtles at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon. Kids can learn about these amazing creatures and witness firsthand the dedicated efforts to protect and rehabilitate them.
4. Children’s Museum in Miami:
While it may not be the most budget-friendly option, the Children's Museum in Miami promises a day full of fun and educational activities that will keep your little ones entertained.
5. Citrus Fruit Picking:
Florida's lush farms offer a delightful experience for families. Pick your own oranges, lemons, or other citrus fruits and savor the fresh flavors of the Sunshine State. Perfect outdoor activity for jet-lag.
6. Manatee Encounters:
Witness the gentle giants of the sea in their natural habitat. Blue Springs State Park and Crystal River are excellent spots to see manatees up close, providing a surreal and memorable experience. We visited Blue Springs State Park and saw hundreds of them. Alternatively, this power plant is also a great spot to see them (if a little surreal).
7. Weeki Wachee Springs - Home of the Mermaids:
Dive into the enchanting world of mermaids at Weeki Wachee Springs. Kids will be captivated by the underwater performances, and the park's ambiance is equally delightful. Our young girl at the time was fascinated by the short show.
8. Tarpon Springs - A Taste of Greece:
Explore the charming Greek village of Tarpon Springs. Wander through quaint streets, savor authentic Greek cuisine, and take a boat tour to learn about sponge diving, a local tradition.
9. Miami Zoo:
Get up close and personal with a diverse range of animals at the Miami Zoo. It's a fantastic outing for families, with plenty of opportunities for animal encounters and learning. The site is huge so make sure you have a stroller or something to carry the kids. We rented a bike for 4 and it was great fun.

Immerse your family in the vibrant and artistic atmosphere of Miami's Wynwood Art District. Marvel at colourful street art and soak up the creative energy. Our kids loved the area and it was a great introduction to street art.
12. Orlando Science Center:
Fuel your child's curiosity at the Orlando Science Center. With interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, it's an educational adventure that's both fun and enlightening. We loved repairing the car and digging for dinosaur bones. There is so much to do there.
13. Crayola Experience Orlando:
Let your kids' creativity run wild at the Crayola Experience in Orlando. They can enjoy an array of arts and crafts activities, making it a colorful and engaging family outing. Of course, it is a commercial experience but it is perfect for a rainy day and the activities are fun. Our kids loved the personalised crayons they got to take home.
14. Daytona Beach:
Relax and unwind on the iconic shores of Daytona Beach. Build sandcastles, take a dip in the ocean, or simply soak up the sun on this famous stretch of coastline. As Europeans, our kids were a little suprised by the many cars driving on the beach and setting up for the day. But, if like us, you are motor-racing fans, you need to take a look at the circuit too.
15. Kennedy Space Center:
Embark on a journey of space exploration at the Kennedy Space Center. Witness rocket launches, visit interactive exhibits, and learn about NASA's remarkable achievements. One of the highlights of a trip to Florida for our kids. Make sure to plan one or even two days there.
Bonus entry: we got lots of feedback from friends about this Dino park. We ended up not making it but you might like to check it out.
