Secluded bliss: a family guide to Tróia, Portugal

Looking for a peaceful beach getaway that's closer to Lisbon than the Algarve? Tróia is the perfect destination. This secluded peninsula offers a tranquil escape with stunning beaches, natural beauty, and a touch of history.

Accommodation

Nestled amidst the dunes, Pestana Tróia Eco-Resort provides a serene beachfront experience. Several self-catering accommodation options are just perfect for families. Many little bungalows also include private pools. While the resort may be limited in amenities, its focus on relaxation and natural beauty makes up for it. Enjoy the multiple indoor and outdoor pools and the convenience of being just a short walk from the beach.

Beach Life

The beach at Tróia is a pristine paradise, boasting miles of soft, white sand. Spend your days swimming, sunbathing, or building sandcastles in this idyllic setting. The beach right outside the resort is fabulous. But if you want a change of scenery, it is basically one very long beach but main spots are Pego, Carvalhal and Aberta Nova which also has a couple restaurants.

Getting There

To reach Tróia, you'll need a car. While public transportation is limited, the journey is well worth it. Instead of taking the long drive around the peninsula, opt for the ferry from Setúbal. This scenic route not only saves time but also offers the chance to spot dolphins in the Sado River.

Exploring the Area

Beyond the beach, Tróia offers plenty to explore. Visit Tróia’s roman ruins, a large Roman archaeological site located right across from the resort. Learn about the region's history and discover ancient ruins while enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

You can also rent a boat from Tróia to see the dolphins and sometimes whales around the area.

For a taste of local life, head to the nearby town of Comporta (which has a lot more charm than Tróia). Explore the charming houses, wander through the rice fields, or enjoy a horseback riding adventure. Comporta and Carvalhal are also the best places for restaurants and shops (e.g. Restaurante Sal right on the beach, Sal Burger).

Tips for Your Trip

  • Bring Essentials: Due to the limited amenities at the resort, be sure to bring your own food, drinks, and toiletries.

  • Book in Advance: To secure your preferred accommodations, especially during peak season, it's recommended to book well in advance.

  • Consider Car Rental: While a car is not essential, it can provide more flexibility and allow you to explore the surrounding areas at your own pace.

Tróia offers a unique and unforgettable experience for those seeking a peaceful and secluded beach getaway. With its pristine beaches, historic sites, and natural beauty, this hidden gem is the perfect destination for families and couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
