Dive into Delights: Top 5 Family-Friendly Seafood Spots near Porto

The best fish and seafood near Porto (and maybe the whole of Portugal) is famously in Matosinhos. Their slogan is “World’s Best Fish”. A mere 30-minute metro ride from Porto, it is definitely worth the detour. You can also enjoy the beach while there.

Another place to be aware of is Afurada. An old fisherman’s village, it is now part of the larger area of Porto (on the Vila Nova de Gaia side - the other side of the river). This is less developed, still more authentic, cheaper and less touristy. its location at the mouth of the river (Douro) means you get amazing views of Porto and the sea. Getting there will likely involve an Uber ride.

Almost every restaurant in both those areas are good. Each have their specialty and if you ask a local about the best place to eat fish or seafood, they will tell you it depends on what fish or what seafood you want. I have broken it down in my top 5 picks for you.

Embrace a truly local experience at Olhinhos do Polvo in Matosinhos.  They offer a choice of two dishes (both octopus-based).  Don't be fooled by the simplicity – the octopus is melt-in-your-mouth tender and bursting with flavour. The octopus rice is amazing. The fixed fee menu (around 17€) includes a starter, a drink and a dessert also.
Address: R. Conde São Salvador 21, 4550-000 Matosinhos

Keep in mind: They only accept cash, so plan accordingly. Bookings recommended.

Matosinhos’ Rua Heróis de França: spoiled for choice!

Venture into Matosinhos and prepare to be overwhelmed (in a good way!) by options.  Rua Heróis de França and the area around it boasts a string of restaurants, each showcasing the day's freshest catch.  No wrong choices here!  Here are a few highly-rated picks:

  • O Lusitano: highly recommended for its authentic and fresh fish dishes.

  • Valentim: a local favourite known for its grilled fish specialties.

  • Dom Peixe: another great option with a delicious seafood rice dish.

Getting There: Take the metro to Brito Capelo station.  All these restaurants are located within walking distance from the station (around 10-15 minutes maximum).

Afurada: authentic fishermen’s village

Cross the Douro to this charming fishing village. Now part of the Porto wider area, it has not lost its charm and authenticity yet though. There are still so many traditional features there that are off the tourist trail: like a city-run common wash-house with its outdoor drying space. Here, restaurants specialise in grilled fresh fish, particularly sardines during the summer months.  Imagine sizzling catches served with simple sides and stunning river views – a true delight!  Here are a few highly-rated picks:

  • Restaurante Vapor: everything is fresh and grilled in the street by the terrace. Get the sardines (if in season, in the summer). Very authentic, simple and cheap experience.

  • Taberna São Pedro: a local favourite known for its grilled fish specialties also grilled on the street. Served with simple side dishes like potatoes and salads.

  • Casa do FC Porto: for football (soccer) fans, a themed restaurant with delicious fish options.

  • Armazém do Peixe: great for a little more upmarket (and more expensive) option.

Getting There: A taxi or Uber will work best if you don’t have a car. Plenty of car parking options though.

World of Wine: restaurants and museums centre

While not strictly seafood-focused, World of Wine offers a couple of options worth mentioning for families. The advantage of World of Wine is that it is much closer to Porto and there are lots of things to do around on a rainy day. Housed in old Port wine warehouses, this centre for cultural and food experiences is one of Porto’s newest attractions.

  • Subenshi Sushi: delicious sushi options for those seeking a taste of Japan with Portuguese fish.

  • Golden Catch: this spot offers a fantastic fish soup and fish and chips, perfect for a family meal.

Address: Rua do Choupelo 39, 4400-088 Vila Nova de Gaia
Getting There:
World of Wine is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro River from Porto. Cross the famous bridge on the lower level. It is a mere 10 minutes walk from there.

Porto: 50 Tried-and-Tested Places to Eat with Kids
€5.99

I've lived in Porto since 2021. I eat out here constantly — with my two kids, on school nights, at weekends, on the days when everyone is tired and nobody can agree on anything.

This list is what I actually use.

Not a curated round-up from a travel blogger passing through. Not a Google Maps compilation. Every single address in this guide has been chosen because I've sat down, ordered food, and eaten it — with my children at the table.

Some of these places you'll find on TripAdvisor. Most you won't. All of them are worth your time.
____________
What's inside:

50+ addresses across Porto — from the tasca where the owner brings extra bread without being asked, to the ice-cream spot my kids would go to every single day if I let them.

For each place you'll find what to order, whether it works for families, and the kind of honest detail you'd only get from someone who actually lives here — like whether it's loud enough that a meltdown won't ruin your evening, or whether you need to ask ahead for a highchair.

There's also an interactive map so you can see exactly where everything is, check opening times, and navigate straight there from your phone.

The guide is updated regularly as I keep eating my way around this city

____________

This guide is for you if:

You're visiting Porto and you don't want to waste a single meal on somewhere mediocre. You want to eat real Portuguese food in places that won't make you feel like you've dragged your kids somewhere they're not welcome. You want a recommendation from someone who lives here — not someone who visited once and wrote it up.

"Your guide about restaurants has made such a difference. First time in Portugal with my child and I am having the best time." - Liz
