What to do on São Jorge, Azores with kids

Unveiling the Azores' secret gem: A family adventure on São Jorge

If you are looking for something off-the-beaten track, yet still easily accessible on the Azores, head to São Jorge. São Jorge Island: a hidden gem in the heart of the Azores, awaits your family for an unforgettable adventure! Unlike the more developed islands, São Jorge offers an off-the-beaten-path experience, perfect for those seeking breathtaking landscapes and a taste of local charm.

How to get there

You can fly from São Miguel island to São Jorge. It is a short and easy flight. São Jorge is also connected by ferry from Faial and Pico making the island a great stopover on a longer itinerary. Check out my 3-week itinerary of the Azores for more information. Once on the island, you will need a car. There is no public transport.

Where to Stay

We based ourselves at Intact Farm Resort. While the name might conjure images of a sprawling resort, it's actually a collection of cozy wooden huts overlooking the ocean. Our wonderful host provided breakfast each morning and even took us on a magical boat trip around the island's caves (completely free!). The huts are simple but have everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Insider Tip

Food shopping can be an adventure. The main supermarket offers a unique 1950s time capsule vibe – think basic essentials with some surprising finds (50 types of shampoo but no eggs?). Don't worry, smaller shops with fresh options exist, but require a bit of exploration.

Embrace the Simple Life

São Jorge is all about immersing yourselves in nature's wonders. Here are some must-do's for your family:

  • Snorkel or Swim: Dive into crystal-clear waters! Portinho boasts a fantastic swimming spot with easy access and showers. Your kids will be amazed by the underwater world, spotting octopus and sea urchins.

  • Explore Topo's Beauty: Drive to the island's tip, following a scenic road lined with stunning hydrangeas. Reward yourselves with a refreshing dip in a natural pool and a drink from the tiny bar at the end.

  • Velas Charm: Take a stroll through Velas, the island's main town. Though small, it offers a delightful glimpse into local life with its quaint houses.

  • Ponta dos Rosais Adventure: Feel like explorers and venture to the island's other tip. The road ends abruptly, replaced by unpaved tracks. Take a chance (and a map!) – you might be rewarded with a secluded afternoon amidst untouched landscapes. Enjoy stunning views and a historic whale watching spot (beware, the lighthouse is inaccessible due to crumbling cliffs).

Where to eat

  • A Quinta: Indulge in fresh seafood at this restaurant – their delicious fish and octopus won't disappoint, despite the laid-back setting.

  • We also had a meal at Restaurante Amilcar as it was recommended by several guidebooks we read but were very disappointed. Some of the food was terribly overcooked, we waited for ages and overall it was mediocre.

Pro Tip: Restaurants are scarce outside Velas. Pack sandwiches for on-the-go meals.

Embrace the Unexpected

São Jorge may not have fancy restaurants or historical landmarks, but its charm lies in its untouched beauty and genuine hospitality. Be prepared to adapt, explore, and create lifelong memories with your family in this unique island paradise!
